Battle of Antietam

About the Battle

The bloodiest single day in American military history, with over 22,000 casualties. Lees divided army was fought to a standstill at Sharpsburg after his lost orders fell into Union hands wrapped around cigars. McClellan failed to commit reserves to finish the job. Lees first invasion of the North failed. Lincoln issued the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation five days later.
