About the Battle
The last great military achievement of the Western Roman Empire. Aetius assembled a coalition including Visigoths and Franks to halt Attila in Gaul. The Visigoth king Theodoric I was killed in the fighting. Attila retreated and his aura of invincibility was broken. The battle may have involved well over 100,000 men on each side. Attila reportedly prepared a saddle pile for his own funeral pyre in case of defeat.
