About the Battle
Philip II destroyed the combined armies of Athens and Thebes, ending the era of the free Greek city-state. The 18-year-old Alexander led the companion cavalry that broke the sacred band of Thebes. Greece would never again be independent of Macedon for centuries. The battle ended the classical age of the polis in a single afternoon.
