About the Battle

Vietnamese forces defeated the French, ending colonial rule in Indochina. The Viet Minh dragged artillery through jungle terrain the French thought impassable. The French garrison surrendered after 56 days of siege. Led directly to the partition of Vietnam and eventually the Vietnam War. The French loss was total.
