About the Battle

Edward I defeated William Wallace. The Scottish schiltrons of massed spears held off cavalry but were shredded by the English longbow, its first great battlefield success. Wallace fled and resigned the guardianship. The defeat showed that infantry masses needed cover from missile fire. Edward hammered Scotland but never fully subdued it. Braveheart condensed the era into myth.
