William the Conqueror defeated King Harold II, who allegedly took an arrow to the eye. The Norman conquest transformed English language, law, and culture forever. French became the language of the ruling class for 300 years. The Bayeux Tapestry tells the story in 70 meters of embroidered cloth. England has not been successfully invaded since.
