About the Battle
The Seljuk Turks defeated the Byzantines and captured Emperor Romanos IV. The battle opened Anatolia to Turkish settlement, eventually leading to the Ottoman Empire. The Byzantines never fully recovered. Called the death knell of the Byzantine Empire by some historians. Led to the Crusades as Byzantium sought help from Rome.
