About the Battle

Harold Godwinson marched his army 185 miles north in four days and annihilated the invading Norwegians of Harald Hardrada, the last great Viking king. Hardrada was killed by an arrow to the throat. So complete was the victory that only 24 of 300 Norwegian ships were needed to carry survivors home. Three weeks later Harold lost everything at Hastings. Traditionally considered the end of the Viking Age.
