About the Battle

The only direct clash between the Arab Abbasid and Chinese Tang empires. The Karluks defected mid-battle, deciding the fight for the Abbasids. Tang expansion west of the Pamirs ended. Legend holds that captured Chinese papermakers introduced paper to the Islamic world, transforming global civilization. The battle is a footnote of empires and a hinge of technology transfer.
