Battle of the Atlantic
About the Battle
The longest continuous military campaign of the war, lasting the entire duration. German U-boat wolf packs nearly strangled Britain in 1941-1943. Allied victory rested on convoy escorts, long-range aircraft, radar, and the breaking of the Enigma naval codes. Tens of thousands of sailors and airmen died on both sides. Churchill wrote that the only thing that ever truly frightened him was the U-boat peril. Over 3,500 merchant ships and 700 warships were lost.
