About the Battle

Ended the Byzantine Empire after 1,123 years. Sultan Mehmed II used enormous cannons, including one that fired 600 kg stone balls. The final breach came through a small gate accidentally left open. Emperor Constantine XI died fighting, tearing off his imperial regalia. Many scholars fled west, helping spark the Renaissance.
