Montgomerys victory over Rommel marked the turning point in North Africa. Churchill said before Alamein we never had a victory, after Alamein we never had a defeat. The British had a massive advantage in supplies and intelligence from cracked Enigma codes. Rommel was on sick leave in Germany during the final battle.
