About the Battle

Alexander the Great defeated Darius III, effectively ending the Persian Empire. Despite being outnumbered at least 4 to 1, Alexander used a brilliant cavalry charge to break the Persian line. Darius fled again, losing the loyalty of his empire. Alexander captured Babylon, Persepolis, and the Persian treasury.
