About the Battle

Alexander first defeated Darius III in person, after marching down from Syria to find the Persian king behind him. The narrow coastal plain negated Persian numbers. Darius fled the field, abandoning his mother, wife, and children to Alexander. Alexander treated them with royal respect, a shrewd political move. The Persian royal treasury was captured soon after.
