About the Battle
A lightly armed British brigade held its ground against overwhelming Chinese divisions for three days along the Imjin. The 1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, was surrounded on Hill 235 and fought until ammunition was nearly gone. Of about 750 Glosters, only some 40 escaped, but the delay blunted the Chinese spring offensive. The Gloucesters were awarded the US Presidential Unit Citation. The Chinese offensive broke against UN lines and peace talks began months later.
