About the Battle
Four months and four assaults were needed to break the German Gustav Line blocking the road to Rome. The ancient monastery atop the mountain was destroyed by bombing after misjudged intelligence. German paratroopers defended the ruins with terrible skill. Polish troops finally raised their flag over the summit in May 1944. Tens of thousands of casualties for a few miles of mountains. The abbey was rebuilt after the war stone by stone.
