About the Battle

The Athenian expedition to conquer Syracuse ended in total catastrophe. Nicias delayed, disease spread, and reinforcements could not save the fleet trapped in the harbor. Archimedes designed war machines defending the city. The retreating army was destroyed and thousands of Athenians enslaved in the stone quarries. Thucydides saw it as the greatest disaster Athens ever suffered.
