About the Battle

The first major defeat of a Mongol army in the field. The Mamluk sultan Qutuz and commander Baybars destroyed the Mongol force under Kitbuqa in the Jezreel Valley. The battle halted the Mongol advance into Africa and broke the myth of Mongol invincibility. Hulagu withdrew after the succession crisis in Karakorum. The Mamluks became the protectors of Islam and later took power in Egypt.
