About the Battle

A Mongol detachment crushed a Polish and German army including the Teutonic Knights. Henry the Pious was killed and his head carried on a spear to burnish Mongol terror. The Mongols then vanished east, having only raided to screen the main invasion of Hungary. Europe never grasped the strategy of the enemy that had beaten it. Nine European princes and lords died.
