About the Battle

The bloodiest single day of the Napoleonic Wars, with around 70,000 total casualties. Kutuzov blocked the road to Moscow behind field fortifications. The battle was a slaughter over a single redoubt and the flches. Napoleon declined to commit his Guard and called it the most terrible of his battles. The road to Moscow lay open, and the city burned a week later. It was the beginning of the end.
